What size glove should a softball middle-infielder use?

As a middle infielder playing either second base or shortstop, it's important to have the right glove size and web type for your age and position. Using a glove that's too big or too small can make it difficult to field the ball, and using the wrong web type can affect your ability to make quick transfers and throws.

We made the chart below to help you determine what size glove and which web is best suited for your softball superstar.

Age Recommended Glove Size Recommended Web Type
5-7 8 -10.5 inches Closed
8-10 10.5 - 11.25 inches Closed or Modified Trap
11-13 11.25 -12 inches Modified Trap or I-Web
14+ 11.5 - 12.5 inches I-Web or H-Web

Younger players should use smaller gloves with closed webbing, while older players should use larger gloves with webbing that allows for faster transfers and more control of the ball.

Below, is a bit of information about each web recommended in the table above:

  • Closed: A solid web with no holes, which provides more support for catching ground balls.
  • Modified Trap: A web that's similar to a trapeze web, but with a smaller pocket for faster transfers.
  • I-Web: A web that forms an "I" shape, which allows for quick transfers and better ball control.
  • H-Web: A web that forms an "H" shape, which provides more stability and support for catching ground balls.

By using a glove that's close to the recommended size and has the right web type, you can help ensure that you're able to field the ball effectively and play your best on the field. It's important to keep in mind that these are just general recommendations, and players may prefer slightly different sizes or different webs based on personal preference and playing style
